Dear Saints,                                                                                               March 2003

Last night I was watching the Grammy awards.  It is the daddy of awards for musicians.  Winning a Grammy for a musician is like winning an Oscar for an actor.  All the best musicians of the past were in attendance and all the newcomers as well.  Last night a newcomer by the name of Norah Jones seem to be accepting one Grammy after another.  It seems every time she was nominated she won.  If you ever watch these award shows you will notice every acceptance speech has something in common.  They all thank a bunch of people for their winning the award.  They begin usually by saying; “I’d like to thank my producer Jimmy, and Tommy, and Larry…” and the names go on and on and on.  That is the main reason I believe all these award shows go past the time they are supposed to air - there are just too many people to thank.  And so it is in our lives.  We may not be giving any speeches soon for receiving a Grammy, but where we are today is because people have loved us and encouraged our walk in this life.  Musicians stood last night at the top of their profession because other people in their life made it happen for them.  May we at Zion be the “producer” for others in our life.  May we strive to see other people experience their dreams.  May we find the joy of serving others in our journey.

There is one other thought I had last night while watching the Grammys.  I couldn’t help but think of all the other musicians who will never stand before their peers to accept an award.  They may only play in dives and smoky nightclubs to people that are too drunk to appreciate the music they hear.  These musicians will never be signed to a major recording contract nor will they probably ever play to thousands of screaming fans.  Nobody will ask for their autographs, but they will continue to play their music and, oh yes, dream.   These relatively unknown musicians are indeed a tribute to the music world, because they continue to play despite the hardships.   They are in my opinion the best musicians because they are motivated not by money, fame or “the industry,” but they play and sing for the love of the sound.  If I had had anything to do with the Grammys last night, I would have given a special award to all the unknown musicians who play simply for the love of it. Similarly, there are pastors that are well known in our area.  They have television commercials and we can see they are doing a great work for God.  I will probably never pastor a church as large as theirs nor will I have written any best sellers, but I am doing what I love and what I am called to do and that is pastor Zion City Church in St. Louis.  When it comes down to it I believe that the musicians who watched the Grammys and those who were receiving Grammies would agree, “It’s all good”.   Now to Him that is able to do above all we can ask or think, to Him be the glory, Amen.

Please keep in your prayers the radio spots on 101.1 FM, the River that will be airing in the middle of March.  Also we have the fellowship lunch on March 16th, and two bible studies this month Friday, March 14th and the 28th.  The bible studies start at 7:00 pm.

Giving thanks to our Father above for you,

 Pastor Rick
